2012 Workshop

My next scheduled workshop is at the Dakota Art Center in Mt. Vernon, Washington, on April 19-22.

The Nuts & Bolts of Painting in Water Media
Painting style and success are directly related to artist supplies and technique. Trying out new tools, supplies and approaches can radically alter your style. This class will include instructor demonstrations, discussion and review of a wide variety of media, tools, and techniques in aqueous mixed media painting. The instructor will demonstrate watercolor, gouache, acrylic, and watercolor crayon media. Concepts of painting composition and design will be emphasized throughout the class.

Workshop students will be invited to "show & tell" any new and/or unusual approaches of their own. Group and individual critiques will be available.

All painting styles and abilities are welcome. This class focuses on experimentation.

Cathy has been painting and teaching art professionally for over 25 years. A Signature member of the National and the Northwest Watercolor Societies, Cathy is also the author of a number of magazine articles about the creative process in painting. Her work was recently featured in the article, "Between Chaos & Serenity" in The Artist's Magazine (June 2010). Also, she juried the Abstract/Experimental Division for that magazine's 27th Annual Art Competition (December 2010). Her series of mixed media paintings on Plexiglas were featured in the September 2006 issue of the Artist's Magazine. For more information about Cathy and her work, visit her website: www.alkiweb.com

Seattle Co Arts Workshop - 2007I recently taught a workshop for Seattle Co Arts, one of the oldest art organizations in the Seattle Area. We had a blast. All of these photos were provided by Martha Brouwer.

Here is one of the collaborative paintings the students did as an exercise. I think it is fabulous.

Here's a collaborative "Value" painting:

And a collaborative "Texture" painting:

This 3 day workshop provides the opportunity to break away from tight, restrictive painting rules and explore new possibilities. Students are taught concrete skills to increase confidence, authority and authenticity in their art work. The classes are energetic, conversational, productive and fun.

We will discuss the practical nature of Creativity: “Why” we value it and “How” it works in our paintings. Then we will simplify universal Design principles in order to understand a painting’s structure and composition. Finally, we will connect Creativity and Design in order to turn our own paintings into unique, personal statements.

This workshop is meant to be experienced as a fun, safe and inspiring environment which allows for exploration and experimentation. Class time includes exercises, talks, demonstrations, slide presentation and daily critiques, with emphasis on student participation in discussions. This class is suitable for both representational and abstract artists. Aqueous mixed media is emphasized.
